>>>the debate is between what is called a realist position and its antirealist oppostion.
these are philosophical terms and let me give you a quick recapitulation of the relevant pilosophies.
Realism. this philosophy holds that the fundamenatal elements of reality are independent of consciousness - this is the doctrine of strong objectivity. A tree in the forest is real even when it is not being perceived, the moon continues in its space-time orbit
even when nobody is looking, and so forth. The
doctrine of strong objectivity is further augment
by another doctrine -casual determinism- that the
course of the universe is determined once for all by the initial conditions. there are many different subphilosophies within this basic realist view and i will mention only the one most often invoked in the discussion of quantum paradoxes: physical realism
considers matter (and its extension, energy, and
fields) to be the only fundamental reality,
all else, including consciousness, are secondary
phenomena and are ultimately reducible to matter,
Furthermore, since the only reality is that defined by space-time, the doctrine of locality is held fundamental.
Idealism. this philosophy holds that the fundamental elements of reality must include the mind(or consciousness) within this broad iscategory I will mention one subcategory
that will important for our discussion in this chapter
:dualism considers mind (pr consciousness) and body to be seperate worlds, both having primary importance.
(there is monistic idealism, which considers consciousness as the primary phenomenon and matter secondary within it
but we will not use this philosophy in this chapter.)
Although diametrically opposite in their basic premises, both realists and idealists agrees that it is possible to speak about reality; in fact, ti is imperative since questions of the nature of reality are the most meaningful questions that faces us. But in a third philosophy one refuses to talk about reality.
Logical positvism . this philosophy is summarized by Ludwig Wittgenstein's dictum, "whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must retain silent." Or as John Wheeler puts it in the context of quantum mechanics,
"no elementary phenomenon is a phenomenon until
it is a registered [observed] phenomenon."
(In the United States, this philosophy is
sometimes called phenomenalism-one can only talk about phenomena and the relations among them. phenomenalists define the task of physics as to give
"definite prescriptions for successfully fortelling the results of observations.") Historically, logical positivism is important because it influenced both Bohr and Heisenberg, the proponents of the Copenhagen interpretation.<<<
